Pinterest is being sus πŸ‘€

Hey pinning friend,

Pinterest is being *extra* sneaky lately...

And I witnessed their shenanigans in real-time yesterday.

Here's the scoop:

Pinterest is Hiding Links

In the FB group and the PMM, we've been documenting the recent "experience" Pinterest has been testing where they remove the Visit Site button on some of our pins.

We were able to request our accounts (and our client accounts) be removed from this "experience" and thought we were in the clear...

Well...

Pinterest is clearly still testing hiding the Visit Site button on mobile and hiding the link altogether on desktop for some pins.

Yesterday, I pulled up this pin, and found that it had no link on desktop.

I hopped over to Pin Inspector to analyze the pin...

Pin Inspector shows there's definitely a link on this pin:

Next, I checked on mobile, and the only way to click on the link was to click on the three dots:

The image on mobile was NOT clickable.

I found a few other pins that had the same issue: pin has a link, but it's hidden completely on desktop and partially hidden on mobile.

WTH Pinterest?!?

All of the pins had at least one thing in common: they were saved by other users.

But the most interesting part of all of this is that when I went back to grab screenshots of the pin, the Visit Site button was BACK on both mobile and desktop.

So, from what I can tell...

Pinterest is still experimenting with the "experience" of hiding the Visit Site button on our pins saved by regular users:

So, yes, pins created by us may be excluded from this, but it appears Pinterest is doing whatever they want with every other pin on the platform. πŸ™„

Hopefully, this is only a temporary experiment.

Users are already frustrated with the increasing number of ads and AI spam on the platform.

Running experiments like this is risky IMO, and reminds me of the Story Pin/Idea Pin era when Pinterest drove away its most loyal user base.

>> Have we learned nothing, Pinterest?!

Let me know what you think about this and if you've seen this foolishness on your pins, too.

Have a great weekend,

Amy
